Roy Hodgson apologies to Liverpool fans on Sky Sports after their exit on penalties from the Carling Cup to Northampton Town. The game ended 2-2, but Liverpool lost 2-4 on penatlies.

Hodgson said in an interview with Sky Sports:
“I don’t think we came anywhere near what I hoped to see apart from in the last 15 minutes of extra-time when we made a superb effort after going 2-1 down,”

“When it goes to penalties and you are at home and in front of the Kop your hope is that at least the players will have the composure and confidence to win the penalty shoot-out but we didn’t.

“All I can do is congratulate Northampton and apologise to everyone; the fans came expecting to see us win and I expected us to win but it wasn’t to be.

“These players have to accept responsibility. I accept responsibility for changing a lot of players in the team, I did it because I honestly thought the players I put on the field were good enough to win the game and they weren’t.

“The obvious conclusion to that was I shouldn’t have changed that many players but we should have been strong enough to get a result.

“We must all take our responsibility. I am just bitterly disappointed that the team I had so much faith in did not repay that faith this evening with the exception of one or two performances.”

Liverpool FC chairman Martin Broughton confirms the club will be auctioned off during the summer. He expects a sale to go through before the end of the transfer window with current American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks leaving the club as soon as sale confirmed. LFC do not have a fixed sale price and will be sold to the highest bidder or someone who can take the club forward and build the much needed new stadium.

Lots of news reports coming in this morning that Rafa Benitez is being offered a serverence deal in order to leave Liverpool FC by the weekend.

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan said:
“Members of Liverpool’s board were locked in meetings as late as 2330 BST on Wednesday. Board members were again meeting on Thursday and Benitez looks certain to leave. The club are concerned that details being leaked out could undermine the severance deal, but no replacement for Benitez has so far been approached. Benitez is currently on holiday but if he decides to accept their offer he could be out by the weekend.”

Rafa’s agent has declined to comment on the story so far. It is reported that Liverpool are offering Benitez £3 million to leave his position as manager of the club.

Round up of some of the main news stories reporting on Benitez’s alleged exit at Liverpool:

Barclays to oversee sale of Liverpool FC – source
More speculation on the sale of Liverpool FC continues – article below suggests Barclays Bank wil oversee the sale of Liverpool.

Benitez was quoted in British media on Sunday as saying Liverpool needed to bring in more players to compete and may even have to sell a few to be able to reinvest.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s four or five or three or five, the cost of a top class player is 15 or 20 million pounds. So with three or four players, you start counting and I think we need up to four new players,” he said in The People.
