Steven Gerrard stepped up in the second half to score two goals within 10 minutes, and Maxi Rodriguez and Ryan Babel both added a goal each.

“We needed to improve, and to win, keep a clean sheet, score four goals and play well, especially in the second half I’m really pleased with the performance of the team.

“They were pushing and pressing at the end of the first half as soon as they conceded the first goal they needed to go forward they were open then we had more space and more time to play.

“Stevie needed to score, it was good for him and the team, Maxi scored the kind of goal he is capable of.

“I needed to change some players use players with fresh legs and it made a big difference. I think we have our chances of fourth place so we will try.”

Liverpool’s draw with Birmingham City, followed by Manchester City’s 6-1 thrashing of Burnley has made the battle for 4th place tighter than ever.

The first half was an uninspiring affair, until Steven Gerrard got on the end of a Glen Johnson mis-hit and turned it into a stunning goal.

Birmingham however, upped their workrate and struck back on the 47th minute and leveled the scores.

Liverpool kept their dream of 4th place in the Premier League alive with a dominant performance and victory over Sunderland.

Two goals from Fernando Torres and a goal from Glen Johnson ensured that Liverpool moved up to 5th in the Premier League, only 3 points behind Tottenham.

Torres opened the scoring after only 5 minutes with a beautiful header from a Dirk Kuyt cross.

Wayne Rooney leveled the scores after being awarded a penalty caused by a tussle between Antonio Valencia and Javier Mascherano. The penalty was saved by Reina, but Rooney ponced on he rebound and netted it. Ji-Sung Park scored the winner on 60 minutes after heading home a Darren Fletcher cross.

Liverpool’s schizophrenic season continued with a 4-1 thumping over Portsmouth. Liverpool managed to score 3 goals within 6 minutes of the first half, effectively ending the game for Portsmouth and giving them no route back into it.

The victory puts Liverpool within 1 point of 4th place in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s quest for 4th place in the Premiership hit yet another stumbling block as they are beaten by Wigan 1-0. Wigan pounced on a Dirk Kuyt mistake and made the reds pay with a goal from Rodallega on 35 minutes.

This was another forgettable performance from Liverpool – they were scrappy, badly organised and failed to grab hold of the game and create any real consistent chances. Credit should go to Wigan though, who played an energetic and persistent game and were rewarded for their efforts.

Liverpool’s aim of 4th place and a spot in the Champion’s League is not over yet, but throwing away vital points to Wigan makes it that little bit harder.
