100 Players Who Shook The Kop: #1 – Kenny Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish was born 4th March 1951 in Scotland and played at Liverpool between 1977 and 1990, and managed the team between 1985 to 1991.

Dalglish was a prolific goal scorer and became the first player to score 100 League goals in the English and Scottish Leagues.

Dalglish came to Anfield with the job of replacing Kevin Keegan – any doubts that fans may have initially had were soon erased as in his first season at Liverpool, Dalglish scored 31 times, many of the goals were vital to Liverpool’s success – such as his winning goal in the 1978 European Cup Final.

He went on to become arguably the most influential member of the most successful club team in English football history, winning further League Championships and European Cups in a period stretching to the late-1980s. When a young Ian Rush arrived at Anfield, Dalglish quickly formed a successful partnership with him, and between them they were instrumental in helping Liverpool win the League as well as the League Cup.

Dalglish’s Liverpool record reads: 515 appearances, 172 goals, 307 as manager, 8 League Championships, 2 FA Cup wins, 3 European Cup wins, 4 League Cup wins, 1 European Super Cup win, 5 Charity Shield wins, 1 Football Writers` Footballer of the Year award, 1 PFA player of the year award, and 3 Manager of the Year awards.

Steven Gerrard made his Livepool debut in 1998 against Blackburn Rovers and had claimed his place in the first team in the 2000-01 season, succeeding Sami Hyypiä as Liverpool team captain in 2003. Gerrard has spent his whole professional career at Anfield starting with a YTS contract and working his way up through the ranks.

During his Liverpool career so far Steven Gerrard has been more instrumental than any other player in turing around games that seemed lost – the most memorable examples being the 2005 Champions League Final and the 2006 FA Cup Final against West Ham.

Robbie Fowler was born in Liverpool and was originaly an Everton fan as a child – despite this Fowler joined Liverpool when he left school in 1991, eventually turning professional on his 17th birthday.

Fowler was an incredible goal scorer – in his 4th game for Liverpool Fowler hit the net 5 times and Fowler looked like an un and coming start that was set to break all records.

Throughout the mid and late 1990′s Fowler was arguably the countries most naturally gifted striker, and Liverpool fans nicknamed him ‘”God”.

Fowler’s success had meant he had become a popular tabloid target, and in 1999, Fowler was fined £60,000 for pretending to snort the white line behind the goal in a celebration afetr scoring – the celebration was intended as a slap to the tabloids who had been running stories suggesting that Fowler had been using cocaine and not looking after himself.

In 2001 Robbie Fowler left Liverpool to play for Leeds United, after stories had circulated about a training ground bust-up with assistant coach Phil Thompson. After spells at Leeds and Manchester City, Robbie Fowler sensationally came back to Liverpool in 2006 on a free transfer. Fowler stayed until 2007 before leaving to play for Cardiff City.

In his Liverpool career, Robbie Folwer played in 369 games, scoring 183 goals.

Liddell was often the club’s leading goal scorer in the 1950s

Bill Shankly said of Liddell: “Liddell was some player…He had everything. He was fast, powerful, shot with either foot and his headers were like blasts from a gun. On top of all that he was as hard as granite. What a player! He was so strong – and he took a nineteen-inch collar shirt!”

Kevin Keegan was signed as a midfielder by Bill Shankly, and after scoring in his debut against Nottingham Forest, Shankly soon pushed up to the top of the pitch as a striker to partner up with John Toshack.

By 1973 Keegan’s talent as as triker was in no doubt, and he was part of the team that won the League Championship, as well as the UEFA Cup.Keegan scored twice in the first leg of the final as Liverpool overcame Borussia Mönchengladbach 3–2 on aggregate.

Keegan remained a prolific scorer in the following seasons at Liverpool in in 1997 Keegan was one of the stars of the Liverpool team that chased the ‘treble’ (League Championship, FA Cup, European Cup), only losing out on the FA Cup to Manchester United.

Keegan left Liverpool in 1977 to play for Hamburg, and his departure paved the way for the signing of Kenny Dalglish as his replacement.

Of his time in Liverpool, Keegan later said, “The only thing I fear is missing an open goal in front of the Kop. I would die if that were to happen. When they start singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ my eyes start to water. There have been times when I’ve actually been crying while I’ve been playing.”

The future captain of England!”
