Liverpool’s quest for 4th place in the Premiership hit yet another stumbling block as they are beaten by Wigan 1-0. Wigan pounced on a Dirk Kuyt mistake and made the reds pay with a goal from Rodallega on 35 minutes.

This was another forgettable performance from Liverpool – they were scrappy, badly organised and failed to grab hold of the game and create any real consistent chances. Credit should go to Wigan though, who played an energetic and persistent game and were rewarded for their efforts.

Liverpool’s aim of 4th place and a spot in the Champion’s League is not over yet, but throwing away vital points to Wigan makes it that little bit harder.

“It was difficult. We were working very hard, we had control. I thought we could win, we could lose. Very close. At the end maybe a draw is fair.

As a manager you have to see your team as strong in defence, in attack we have to be a little bit better. Both teams were working hard trying to stop the other.”

Dirk Kuyt scored his 50th goal for Liverpool in this Merseyside derby and secured the victory over Everton. Liverpoool went down to 10 men in a scrappy Merseyside derby when Sotirios Kyrgiakos’s was sent off in the first half for a lunge on Fellaini, but today’s victory saw Liverpool strengthen their push to claim 4th place in the league.

Rafael Benitez:
“It was massive for us. To win in a derby is really important – to win in a derby with 10 players at Anfield is more important.

“I was really pleased for the players and the fans because everyone was working so hard that I think at the end we deserved to win. Hopefully we’ll have even more confidence for the next game against Arsenal.

“As for the referee, I think there were too many tackles which you can analyse so I prefer not to speak about him.”

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has gone on the record to dispel rumours that both he and Yossi Benayoun are leaving Anfield. Rafa was adament that they were both staying.

Liverpool tightened up their recent poor form with a two goal victory over Bolton.

Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring in the first half from a pass by Aquilani. Insua got the second after his shot was deflected in off Kevin Davies. This victory means that Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 6 league games.

An extra boost was given to team as Spurs were held to a draw, meaning that Liverpool are now only one point behind them in the race for 4th place.

“I am pleased with the result and the second half but not too happy with the first half – but at the end of the day we needed to win and we won.

“In the first half they had two chances and we were a little lucky but in the second half it was different and we could have scored more goals.

“I think we are improving. Clearly you can see the team is working hard.”

Liverpool broke their run of poor form and sealed a well deserved victory over Spurs, despite being without key players Torres and Gerrard.

Dirk Kuyt was the hero of the night and scored both goals, the first coming early on in the game after only 6 minutes, and the second coming right at the death of the match in extra time.

Rafa Benitez said:
“The key to the victory was character, I think, against a good side. We had three or four clear chances to score and when we needed to be we were strong in defence. We knew it was an important game before the match and we were determined to be professional, work hard and do our job. It is a long race for the top four places, though.”
