Liverpool suffer a late draw against Lyon, despite a Ryan Babel wonder goal.

Liverpool needed a win to allow them to regains control of their Champions League hopes, and for much of the game they looked comfortable in posession but failed to turn it into solid chances at goal – the best opportunities were squandered by Voronin.

Ryan Babel replaced Torres with just under 30 minutes to lay and made an instant impact. Babel picks up the ball from about 25 yards out, keeps the ball close to his feet as he steers it towards the right and then hit a rocket of a shot into the top corner.

Liverpool’s troubles continue as they concede an injury-time goal in a 2-1 Champions League defeat by French side Lyon. Cesar Delgado scored an injury time winner that marked Liverpool 4th successive defeat.

Benitez said:
“We’ve come back before – and we can do it again. We now must be ready for the next game. I have confidence we have the quality to overcome these problems.

“We have to push players now, to keep working and to maintain our confidence. We just had too many problems before and during the game. Losing Glen Johnson before the match, and then Gerrard and Martin Kelly during the match, was just too much to contend with. It was a difficult game with all our problems, and we had done well to be leading at the break. Then we had two or three chances soon after the interval.

“Had we scored, it would have changed everything.”

After six straight wins in a row, Liverpool come crashing back down to earth in a two defeat to Fiorentina. Liverpool were sluggish and poor throughout the game and and the final score was a fair representation of the game. Stevan Jovetic was the thorn in Liverpool’s side and scored both goals.

Benitez said:
“There were too many mistakes and problems. Our mentality in the first half was not right, we were bad all over the pitch. I cannot really recall a performance like that. We certainly will never be as bad again.”

“We made a lot of chances and just did not take them. So we ended up under pressure at the end of the match when we should have been winning comfortably. Although we did not score the goals we wanted, we did win and I’m happy.”

“We are confident now, we are winning games in a row and we have started the Champions League with three points but hopefully we will be much better next time.”

The first leg is at Anfield on April 8, and then Liverpool go to Stamford Bridge on April 14.

Benitez said:
“Hopefully it won’t make a difference to us that the second leg is away. We have to think about the first game at Anfield with our fans behind us and look to get a positive result to take to Stamford Bridge. We need to make sure we don’t make a mistake in the first leg like we did in last year’s semi-final. They will be two tough games but we are playing well and clearly we are confident we can win.”

“At this stage of the competition, you know you’ll play against a good team. Chelsea are a very good team. We know each other very well and this is an exciting draw. We knew it would be difficult to avoid an English team but we need to approach the two games with confidence. We’ve done the double over them this season in the league but clearly these two games in the quarter-finals will be different.”

If Liverpool beat Chelsea they will face either Barcelona or Bayern Munich in the semi finals.

“We knew it would be very difficult. They were confident, we had to work very hard. We had some good chances in the end with the free-kick we scored from a very good goal without (Steven) Gerrard and (Fernando) Torres in the second half.”
