Hard to believe that it was a year ago that Liverpool beat Manchester United 4 – 1 (after going 1 nil down) with a team that isn’t that different from the team that is struggling so much today.

It was business as usual on the pitch with Torres opening the scoring with a deft header after 31 minutes. It was his 50th goal for the club, and was notable by the fact that he has taken fewer games than previous Anfield legends to reach that number.

Liverpool remained industrious in the second half and two more goals followed from Kuyt and Benayoun, with Gerrard also coming close during the game. Ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Keane managed to grab one goal back for Spurs in the 77th minute.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez:
“I was trying to keep Sami [Hyppia] on the bench until the last minute but I couldn’t because the fans were pushing me. Working with Sami for five years I know he is a fantastic professional and hopefully he will do the same in Germany and then come back to us.

“Clearly he will have a position with us in two or three years if we’re still here. But it’s a little bit emotional and a little bit sad today.

“We knew it was important for the fans that we finished the season really well. When it’s the last game it’s difficult to keep working hard but I was impressed with [Javier] Mascherano who just kept running.”

Liverpool could have finished he match off much earlier but the woodwork denied them – Andrea Dossena had two headers that came off the crossbar, Xabi Alonso volleyed against the bar and Fernando Torres had a shot bounce back off the post.

Rafa Benitez said after the match:
“We know we are still in the title race. I think it puts a bit more pressure on Manchester United. They have experience and quality but they will be under pressure.”

“We were creating chances so we were disappointed we could not score. But to score the late goal we are really pleased. We were doing the right things all the time, it was just the finishing that needed to improve – and also their keeper was doing well. But if you are playing well you just have to keep going. We had confidence until the end, this team has belief that we will be able to score right at the end. We are playing with confidence and it’s easier to play better when you have confidence. It is a positive cycle – you are playing well, you are creating chances, you are scoring goals, you are winning matches.”

Match winner Yossi Benayoun said after the match:
“We missed a lot of chances and you start to think it will be one of those days that the ball will not go in.
We were lucky in the end to create two or three more chances. I missed a better chance before I scored but I was lucky to get another one and I hit well and it went in. It is the sweetest moment to score a goal in the last minute. We are very happy to get the three points. We hope Manchester United will drop points and hopefully we can steal the title in the end.”

Rafa Benitez was pleased with the performance on the whole, but felt that Liverpool could have scored more. He said:

“The team was doing well but it’s true I am not totally happy because we could have scored more goals from the counter attack. We were playing against 10 players and had three or four more chances. It’s really important to take them because you never know what’s going to happen with the goal difference.

“Today it wasn’t key but in other games it has been. I wanted more goals. It’s an area we need to improve.

“Don’t get me wrong, I am really pleased and happy. The players did a fantastic job but you can always improve.”
