100 Players Who Shook The Kop: #8 – Kevin Keegan

Kevin Keegan was signed as a midfielder by Bill Shankly, and after scoring in his debut against Nottingham Forest, Shankly soon pushed up to the top of the pitch as a striker to partner up with John Toshack.

By 1973 Keegan’s talent as as triker was in no doubt, and he was part of the team that won the League Championship, as well as the UEFA Cup.Keegan scored twice in the first leg of the final as Liverpool overcame Borussia Mönchengladbach 3–2 on aggregate.

Keegan remained a prolific scorer in the following seasons at Liverpool in in 1997 Keegan was one of the stars of the Liverpool team that chased the ‘treble’ (League Championship, FA Cup, European Cup), only losing out on the FA Cup to Manchester United.

Keegan left Liverpool in 1977 to play for Hamburg, and his departure paved the way for the signing of Kenny Dalglish as his replacement.

Of his time in Liverpool, Keegan later said, “The only thing I fear is missing an open goal in front of the Kop. I would die if that were to happen. When they start singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ my eyes start to water. There have been times when I’ve actually been crying while I’ve been playing.”
