100 Players Who Shook The Kop: #42 – Steve McMahon
Bob Paisley said of Steve McMahon: “When Steve McMahon plays well, I always think that Liverpool will play well.”
Steve McMahon was born 20 August 1961 in Liverpool and initially started his career at Everton as a youth. He joined Liverpool in 1985 after a spell at Aston Villa, and stayed at Anfield until 1991. McMahon was the first signing that Kenny Dalglish made as a manager, and McMahon was seen as the natural replacement for Souness in midfield.
Steve McMahon played a crucial role in one of the most successful Liverpool sides in history, and in total he played 277 games, scoring 50 goals.
McMahon was also immortalised for his role in The Anfield Rap which was Liverpool’s official FA Cup final song in 1988. As a one of two Liverpool locals in the team, McMahon’s lines were rapped in ‘scouse’. The song had more success than the team getting to number 3 in the charts, whilst Liverpool lost the game to Wimbledon.
