100 Players Who Shook The Kop: #11 – Ray Clemence
Ray Clemence was bought by Bill Shankly from Scunthorpe in the summer of 1967. Clemence went straight into the reserves team and despite the odd appearance, it wasn’t until 1970 that he became Liverpool’s first choice goalkeeper.
Clemence was arguably Liverpool’s greatest keeper, and he is one of football’s most decorated goalkeepers ever.
Ray Celemence was with Liverpool between 1967 to 1981, and with Clemence in goal the Liverpool team of the 1970s became one of the most successful ever. In his first full season, Clemence only conceded 22 goals in 41 matches – a phenomonal record. The Liverpool defense of Clemence, Neal, Thompson, Hansen, Kennedy was arguably one of the greatest in the world at the time.
Ray Clemence helped Liverpool win the League Championship 5 times, and kept 335 clean sheets in a total of 665 games.
